This summer my 17 year old daughter got more serious about sewing. She’s always been interested in fashion and designing clothes, specifically taking clothing she buys at thrift stores and making clothing and undergarments from them.
She’s taking jeans, and turning them into skirts. The softer material, like from tshirts and pajama bottoms, she is using to make teddy and panty sets. Her stitch work is really well done and her sewing is turning out super cute. She has a talent for working with stretchy material, something I could never get the hang of. She’s got a natural talent.
It inspired me to get started on the plans I have to print my coloured in “Galiano Island” colouring pages that are in my calendar, onto iron on tshirt transfer printer paper. I’m then going to iron them onto the back of the button up shirts I purchased at our little thrift store a couple of weeks ago. I also want to take the shrunken images and iron them on the bright colours of material I have, to make Galiano themed prayer flags, as well as put them on the blank canvas toiletries bags that my mother-in-law and I are drawing on.
I also have a Guns N Roses hoodie that’s zipper is broken, and a Hawaiian Dirt Shirt that’s got grease stains on the front, that I cut the images off the back of them to sew them onto the back of both my biker jean vests.
It's been a lot of fun gathering our good thrift store finds and my old clothing to make new, upcycled and unique clothing that reflects my creative style.
This weekend my daughter and I will be back to the thrift store to pick through the clothes, with her imagining what she can create with what she finds. Will post our finished clothing pieces as they finish, and let you all know which ones will be for sale.
