I use the word pain, multiple times a day. I think about it, I say it, I read it, and I write it. With all that use of the word pain, it got me thinking though, what are other words that can be used instead of the word pain.
So I headed towards a site I’ve been utilizing a lot lately, https://www.thesaurus.com, and came up with an impressive list of alternate words.
Here they are in alphabetical order:
Ache, affliction, agony.
Burn.
Catch, convolution, cramp, crick.
Discomfort, distress.
Fever.
Gripe.
Hurt.
Illness, injury, irritation.
Laceration.
Malady, misery.
Pang, paroxysm, prick.
Sickness, smarting, soreness, spasm, stitch, strain.
Tenderness, throb, throe, tingle, torment, torture, trouble, twinge.
Wound.
This list got me inspired to look at using more than just the word pain, to describe pain. I want to find ways to convey that physical pain I’m writing about in a more descriptive manner. Writing has certainly lit a fire in me and I look forward to seeing what is used and where in my future written work.
